Brunch in Vancouver: Gastown hot spot L'Abattoir brings exceptional taste to the table

If there's one thing that everyone residing under the Style Republic Magazine umbrella loves, it's brunch. To be frank, it's a complete fluke (and utter miracle) that our editorial team has yet to carve out an entire section of this site dedicated to the tasty weekend affair. That being said, when historic Gastown hot spot L'Abattoir invited us in to try out their brunch menu, we jumped at the chance.

Allow me to preface this piece by stating that I had been to the restaurant previously for their dinner service, but never in search of a good old-fashioned Benny. As I remembered, the room at L'Abattoir is spectacular - what you'd expect and more: an interior fitting of its historic Gastown location, a vintage feel with modern touches - being in this venue feels a lot like dining in a contemporary New York City loft (which, for the record, is a great feeling when you miss the bustling Metropolis).

My guest and I kicked off our visit with a fête not frequently seen in restaurants around these parts - a glorious pastry basket. To be clear, I'm not talking about some basket of bread with a side of butter. No my friends, this basket of goodies brought around to our table was populated with fresh, decadent cinnamon buns (sans raisins, bonus points in my book), croissants and scones.

I snagged the poached eggs with smoked pork belly, accompanied by cheddar sabayon and a homemade English muffin (delicious - and what I was told is the restaurant's most popular brunch item).

My guest on the other hand opted for the full breakfast - another ridiculously good-looking dish; 2 eggs, duck sausage, pork & beans, boudin noir, rösti, and toast. I bravely stole a bite of the rösti - it was out of this world.

For those interested in following suit (which, we highly recommend), L'Abattoir (located at 217 Carrall Street) rolls out their brunch service on weekends only, between 10AM - 2PM. The restaurant's full brunch menu can be viewed here.
