Big Little Lies: 5 good reasons to watch the show that everyone's talking about

January 26, 2018

It's no secret that Big Little Lies boasts big names. Actresses Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern and Zoe Kravitz make up the sensational cast of HBO's latest wonder child. We'll admit, we were late to the party when it came to adding BLL to our must-watch list. If you've yet to check out the series that everyone seems to be on about, here are a few good reasons to start taking "everyone" seriously.

1. Wholesome, upstanding suburban moms dropping the ‘F’ bomb

Why does the predominantly wholesome Reese Witherspoon dropping the ‘F’ bomb make such good television? At first, we thought it was because we still remember her best for films such as Sweet Home Alabama, and think that such a word couldn’t possibly make it into her day-to-day vocabulary. But, after making it to the fourth episode of Big Little Lies, we realized that it’s because she’s joined by a collective of other (and equally as classy) actresses who also parade out the profanity in the funniest possible contexts.

2. Visually stunning beachfront property is inspiring

This just in: every family in Monterey has an expansive piece of beachfront property - unless, of course, you’re Jane. Madeline occupies Hannah Montana’s former beach abode (true story), Celeste and Perry White own a luxurious, family-friendly spot overlooking the ocean, and Renata lives in what can only be described as a modern marvel (also boasting killer water views). If watching these ladies squabble and struggle through real-people problems (and those of their six-year-olds) doesn’t inspire you to think big, we don’t know what will.

3. Alexander Skarsgård (…ALL of Alexander Skarsgård?)

Not to call spoiler alert (spoiler alert!), but you certainly see a lot of Alexander Skarsgård in Big Little Lies. In fact, you might see ALL of Alexander Skarsgård in Big Little Lies. Now, “all” is up for debate, as the internet is currently still in a tizzy over whether or not his "big penis reveal" was really HIS reveal, if you know what we mean...

4. Zoe Kravitz, Zoe Kravitz, and… Oh, Zoe Kravitz.

Bonnie (played by Zoe Kravitz) is a gorgeous departure from the chaos that ensues between Big Little Lies’ primary characters – that is, until the chaos is inevitably brought to her front door. Bonnie is a free-spirited (hippie?) soul married to Madeline’s ex-husband, Nathan. Should you watch Big Little Lies for Bonnie? Absolutely. Much to the dismay of fellow Monterey citizens, Bonnie brings to the table some of the show’s sexiest moments (...even when she doesn’t mean to).

5. Meryl Streep just signed on for season two.

This reason speaks for itself. Ever since news dropped that Meryl Streep would be joining the ladies of Monterey, we started checking HBO for the second season’s release (note: they have yet to begin shooting…)
